For beginners, most AR-15 rifles available today are well-built and reliable. While the AR15 price range may vary, the key differences between a standard $800 AR-15 and a more advanced DDM4v11 costing $1800 are the brand, markup cost, and additional accessories.

If you're looking for a rifle that comes equipped with the accessories you want right out of the box, we highly recommend purchasing one rather than opting for a bare-bones $600 AR-15 that requires additional parts and could end up costing more in the long run.

As the time of writing this guide, most modern AR15s on the market are top notch even the most basic ones. What drives the higher price tag are mostly branding and additional accessories.

Colorado Buyers: Read This First

If you live in Colorado, you need to know about SB25-003 before you buy anything.

The DeadlineStarting August 1, 2026, buying any standard AR-15 in Colorado requires:

• A permit that costs money and takes time
• Either 4 hours or 12 hours of mandatory training
• Extra background checks through private vendors

What This Means

• Buy before August 1, 2026 = no permit needed
• Buy after August 1, 2026 = jump through hoops
• Owning rifles purchased before the deadline = totally legal forever

Your Options:

2. Wait and deal with the new requirements
3. Build from parts (also requires permit after August 1)

The Training Requirement:

AR-15 Calibers

The AR-15 can be chambered in various popular centerfire cartridges besides 223/5.56, including 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 300 Blackout, 22 Nosler, 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOM, 350 Legend, and even Beowulf. Overall, the 5.56 or 223 are the most popular.

AR-15 Gas Systems (Direct Impingement Vs Piston)

Most AR-15 rifles use a system where gases are directed backward through a tube into the expansion chamber of the bolt carrier group (BCG). This forces the BCG to move backward. It's commonly known as "Direct-Impingement," although the more accurate name would be the "Internal Piston" system.

Another system that has become popular is the piston-operated mechanism. In this case, the tube is replaced with a steel rod. The gases then move the rod, which is mechanically connected to the BCG, pushing it backward.

Small Arms Solution

Piston-operated systems have certain advantages, like requiring less cleaning and working better with suppressors. However, they haven't become popular among most people. Piston systems are also heavier, much more expensive, and don't offer significant benefits to the average user. • For a safe / completely legal choice, go with a 16-inch barrel. (16" without accounting for muzzle device length)
• 1:9 twist rate is the optimal for most barrel lengths shooting various 5.56 bullet weight
• Shorter barrels (below 11.5 inches) may cause reliability issues.
• Barrels shorter than 16 inches need to be built as pistols or registered as SBRs.
• Longer barrels (over 16 inches) extend the rifle's effective range.
• The barrel profile is crucial, with the "government" profile being outdated and unnecessary for civilians.
• Lighter profiles, like "pencil" or slightly heavier options, reduce weight while effectively managing heat.
• Avoid "bull" or "heavy" profiles unless required by your state or for dedicated long-range bench rifles.

AR-15 Chambers

If you're new to AR-15 rifles, it's recommended to start with either 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde chambers. What exactly are they?

The 5.56 NATO chamber is considered the standard choice because it allows you to shoot both the less expensive .223 Remington ammunition and the hotter 5.56 NATO ammo.

While .223 Remington barrels are becoming rare these days, they can still be found occasionally. However, it's important to note that you shouldn't shoot 5.56 NATO ammunition in rifles chambered for .223 Remington.

On the other hand, the .223 Wylde chamber is a newer option that offers great performance. It's important to understand that .223 Wylde is not a specific cartridge that you can purchase at your local store. It's a chamber dimension that allows firing both 5.56 and 223 with optimal performance.

AR-15 Triggers

Most out-of-the-box AR-15s will have a standard mil-spec single-stage trigger with about a 9 lb trigger pull. The user can swap out the factory trigger with an aftermarket AR15 trigger at any time to improve the overall performance of the rifle.

Don't let a factory trigger push you away from a great factory rifle, remember you can always swap it out later.

AR-15 Handguards

Handguards are a crucial part of an AR-15, offering mounting options, protection from heat, and safeguarding the barrel. The two main types are "Free-floated" and "Drop-in." Drop-in handguards are cheaper but can affect accuracy.
